My Thoughts on #FacebookDad

watch the original video HERE !! (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kl1ujzRidmU)

So by now everyone and their grandmother has seen this video and has an opinion one way or the other. As I state in my vid, I agree 100% with what the father did. If you also read his Facebook page you will see this is not the first time he warned his daughter there would be consequences but clearly talking was not working. I think it’s also important to realize that the daughter will not be “traumatized” by this. Some have even gone so far as to say she will think he wanted to shoot her. Nonsense ! I’m not fond of it but guns are very commonplace in many parts of America and as this man has his legal permit then we should think of it as more of a tool, like as if he used a hammer. He told her that he would put a bullet through the computer, so he was simply following through with what he said. Parents rarely do that anymore so I can see how it might look surprising, but it isn’t. Surely if he had run it over with his truck no one would think he was itching to squish his daughter too right?

The main problem which is just now being personafied though this viral video is our lack of respect as a society. We no longer respect any of our polititians (of course there is scandal and corruption with some), not even the good ones. As the Occupy movement has clearly demonstrated, we also no longer have respect for the police or laws. Teachers are often pressured to pass students, and if a kid gets a bad grade, the blame lies much more in the educator these days than on the student. And parents, well I mean, they really are damned if they do, and damned if they don’t. So it’s no wonder that kids think they should stick it to the man every chance they get.

There was a case in Quebec recently where a 12 year old girl had a lawyer and took her father to court over grounding her from a school trip as she had posted inappropriate photo’s of herself on some dating site. Of course the Judge refused to hear it and said that a man giving appropriate discipline to his child was none of the Court’s business right? WRONG. The Judge ruled the punishment was too harsh, and basically told the girl that she didn’t have to listen to her father and she could go on the trip. For real, I’ll link it below. You have got to be kidding me that we live now in a society where a father cannot hammer into his clueless pre-teen daughter’s head that it is wrong to entice pedophiles and can have dangerous consequences. Everything is someone else’s fault and yet no one is to blame. And in amongst all this insanity, one Dad stood up and said “Enough”.

One thing I’ve noticed while researching this story is that most of the people who think he did the right think are adults, and most who think it was wrong are kids. Now just because you are young doesn’t mean your opinion is any less valid, so I’d be really interested in hearing what you think the father could have done differently that would have been effective. Make no mistake, this young girl SERIOUSLY crossed the line and punishment needed to be as serious. So what do you think the Dad could have done that would have been equally effective? All I can say guys, is that when i was 15 I usually thought I was right too, yet in my 20’s I can clearly look back and see I probably deserved ALL my punishments. What a brat ! But never in my wildest dreams could I have shown that much disrespect.

I think at the end of the day every parent must make the choice that is right for them. I am still too young to be a parent so thankfully I don’t need to make these decisions just yet. The thing that really gets me about this whole situation is that everytime you hear of someone under 20 doing something bad, we all collectively cry “where oh where were the parents, if only someone had parented that poor boy or girl they wouldn’t have grown up like this”. It’s become a mantra of sorts. So okay, here it is, a little parenting, exactly what we asked for.

All anyone can really ask is that before you make your decisions one way or the other you think about what would you do? And read this gentleman’s Facebook, he’s opened it up to us in an attempt to avoid 17,000 different media outlets hounding him. I HIGHLY reccommend reading his posts, you will see a loving, respectful, intelligent, and very articulate man. Check out his other vids on YouTube as well from BEFORE all this attention. He just seems like your average normal guy. Will he and I be friends? I doubt it as we come from very different worlds and walks of life. Would he get my vote for “Father of the Year”? I’d give him a shot :P
