Gay Marriages Declared INVALID in Canada !!
Even as I write this I am in absolute shock. Just when you think the WTF list of the Harper Govenment (I only call it that in disgrace, as I don’t think he gets the right to say he represents the Canadian people) can’t get any longer, well here is this.
Apparently a Department of Justice laywer under the Conservative government has decleared that all marriages performed in Canada since it became law in 2004 are now NULL and VOID if the home country you came from does not allow gay marriage. I’m assuming they mean at the federal level as I know there are a number of individual states that do have laws in place to afford gay people their human rights. Thousands of couples all over the world woke up this morning to find out that the marriage license they have been using to obtain spousal benefits, hospital visits, and joined property equity have been blasted by our current govenment. What’s more, they broadcasted it without even having the decancy to contact these couples to tell them what was going to happen. Could you imagine being heterosexual and waking up one morning to find that the person you were married to for 8 years, who you have a home, commitment, and family with, is no longer your wife or husband?
And how is this just coming about now? I’m no lawyer, but the people in the Federal government sure as hell are. This was a hotly debated subject in Canada and I find it impossible to believe that if these marriages were not valid in other countries that no one knew before. Because after all these years, who really went digging to try to find fault with a law that everyone has long learned to integrate into our society. Funny how we didn’t notice that when people were spending their life savings to come to our beautiful country and fulfill their lifelong wish of having their love recognized.
Former Toronto Mayor David Miller who was Mayor at the time the original law came into effect said he was “shocked’, “I’m saddened and, as a Canadian who does a lot of work abroad, I’m very embarrassed” Prime Minister Stephen Harper says he had no foreknowledge that the Federal lawyers were going to make such an annoucement, but Mr. Miller disagrees saying “I ran a major government – the sixth largest government in Canada – and I can tell you that this kind of decision would not happen without the Prime Minister being briefed”.
To be honest, it really wouldn’t surprise me if the Prime Minister was simply using this as a way to cover up yet another scandel. He seems to delight in taking extreme measure to focus people’s attention away form his wrong doing, like for example when he shut-down parliment to avoid talking about war torture. The scary thing about him as a leader is that he does these things right in front of our faces. He has no respect for the Canadian people and as such is the type of man who will look you in the eye and tell you the sky is green even tho it is clearly blue.
Forget the embarassment, the shame, the outrage that all Canadian’s are feeling this morning. And believe me, WE ARE. This is wrong on so many levels that I’m practically shaking as I write this. Never have I been so ashamed of my country. When I was a kid we were a beacon of hope seen all around the world. A land of freedom and justice where people could live their lives free of persecution. There are still far more great things about Canada then there are bad, but I worry under a Harper government how much longer those things will last. But thinking of the human face on this, the way these poor people must feel after a lifetime of stuggle to achieve what so many take for granted, only to have it pulled out form under them. They are just normal human beings like anyone else, not trying to make waves or hurt anyone, just love and be loved and live their private lives.
This is going to have major ramifications around the world. It will at the very least damage an already burning reputation. An article I read earlier had the author suggesting that if we start declaring that we do not allow certain freedoms for individuals based on their country of origin, could we then expect that Muslim women living here will be denied the right to vote as they cannot in their home country? Will we no longer allow Egyptian or Chinese people to critizie the government? Will we murder all gays from Uganda who are here since that’s what they do back home?
Personally I’m horrified at the possiblities that could now come to be. Aside from shame, I’m also scared. Scared to live in such an oppressive society, scared of Harper’s reign of terror, and mostly scared at who’s next. This is not one of those things you just trip over, this had to be a long and calculated plan. So to all the gay readers seeing this blog, I am sorry. So very sorry. We are still a very gay-friendly country and I promise you most of us don’t think like this and I just can’t imagine we will continue to vote this tyrant in after all the horror we have witnessed first hand. We made a mistake letting this man at the helm, and I promise as a Canadian I will do anything I can to rectify that. “True North, strong and free” my ass.
Remember Mr. Harper, and I’ve said this many many times. When all the minorities have been attacked, when all the individually has been beaten down, when no one is allowed to be free anymore, there will be no one left to attack but the rich, straight, white, middle-aged man. Who will be left to protect you after you abuse everyone else?

for something a little more uplifting, I think we should all play Maya’s “Love Is The Answer” a little more loudly. Can you imagine a world with NOH8 Mr. Harper?
