SEMISONIC - CLOSING TIME
Wow, what a song huh? 1999 was probably the most awesome year of my life. I was 17, had an amazing group of friends, and really loved life. I can remember drinking beers with friends in my grandparents cottage in the summer listening to “Big Shiny Tunes 3” (www.muchmusic.ca) and this being my favorite song on the album. I’m almost having a bit of a Dawson’s Creek moment now thinking about it. I had so many dreams of escaping the small place I lived it, dreams of moving to the big city and making something of myself. Life gets so different as we get older. Where once we all lived in the confines of a very small town, now people I grew up with that I saw everyday are spread all over the world. I’ve known so many awesome and exciting people in my, ahem, 20-something years and listening to these old songs from when were were just stupid kids brings back the fond memories. We are free at that age, but so many of us lose our freedom as we move ahead. Not that it is stolen form us, but somehow we seem to forget it, forget how it felt and what it meant. And years go by with you slowly forgetting until we turn around and say “whoa, where did all that time go”? We should all make time each and every day to do the things we are passionate about. Write a song, plant a garden, go out to the club, whatever you do that makes you you, go for it. Writing, blogging, and performing are the dreams I had, and I’m fighting tooth and nail for them; even though sometimes the road is hard, at the end of the day I feel so fulfilled that at least I’m trying. A dear friend and I have said since we were little kids that we expect one day to end up on a porch together after we’ve lived our lives. Old ladies drinking Rev’s and making fun of all the people we’ll enevitably hate and we’ll laugh and be a little kooky and go out at the same time. And you know, I really don’t mind the idea of that because I know we’ll have so much to talk about. Because we’re alive and we want to be. Because I know that we won’t let our lives be boring and obscure. But mostly because we only get one life, and it is truly too short to live it afraid of what others will think. So turn up the track loud, grab a good buddy, skype, call, text, whatever, and make a connection. Cause it’s closing time, and you don’t have to go home, but you can’t stay here :P
